Civilians disappearing in the streets of a city. Flashbacks of the Goblin Lord showing what happens if you give goblins mercy. Villagers scraping together meager rewards in the hopes of getting help. ![]() Goblin Slayer and his new party aren't at the same level of risk as the newbies but we do continue to see the trauma inflicted by goblins upon the general populace. ![]() The newbie party being under-prepared is there to contrast against Goblin Slayer's obsessive levels of preparation. He understands the risk they pose and is committed to eradicating them, not using them as a stepping stone to more glamorous adventuring. It establishes a purpose for a character like Goblin Slayer to exist. It establishes that goblins are a severe threat to civilians and low-level adventurers, and because of that quests that deal with them don't attract higher level adventurers. While the later chapters don't follow through with the danger set up in the beginning I do think the brutal opening serves a purpose.
